Designing Your Window Displays

Having an appealing shopfront is one of the foremost important things for any business, hoping to attract customers. Your shopfront is the first impression a potential customer will get of your business, which is why it is crucial that it is a good one. It may mean the difference between attracting a customer or missing out on a sale.

Keeping up with stock changes and the turning of the seasons can be tricky though, so this is your reminder to redesign your shop window in time for Christmas and breathe a new lease of life into your business.

Firstly, you want to create a design for how you want your shop front to look. You should take into account who your target consumer is. For example, if you have a specialism, like dog grooming, you’ll be wanting to appeal to dog owners. In this case, you may choose to go for a display with dog treats and toys or leads and harnesses. By tailoring your display to your target audience, you’re in with a better chance of attracting the right customers.

Alternatively, you might want to go for something a bit more abstract. You could create a narrative with your display, incorporating your products into the scene. This works nicely for a seasonal display, for example, a Christmas Nativity or Easter-Egg Hunt display. This gives you a great opportunity to create something really eye-catching, and hopefully passersby will be intrigued to see more.

As your designing your display, bare-in-mind what products you’re keen on showing off the most. Put your key products or best-sellers in the focus of your arrangement and try to avoid overcrowding the display. Too many items can be overwhelming.

Use lighting to enhance your display. If everything on display is nicely lit, it can create a more attractive ambience, which can be appealing to shoppers. Experiment with different colours and tones to see what works best for you.

When it comes to actually building the display, you should try and create depth and dimensions by placing your display items at different heights. Create layers with props and products to give your display a three-dimensional feel. Top-tip: Keep going to the front of your shop and looking at the display from the perspective of a passerby. This way you’ll be able to take into consideration the shoppers’ point of view and line of sight, and adjust if necessary.

Other Points to Remember

  • Update your display regularly, to keep up with changing trends and seasons
  • Don’t be afraid to incorporate props to really tell a story
  • Keep your display neat and tidy. A cluttered window can be un-appealing
  • Use signage wisely
  • Ask for feedback from friends or family and use their input to your advantage

Remember, the key to making an appealing shop window display is creativity. You want to go for something that people haven’t done before, whilst staying true to your brand.
